Recently I’ve been doing a little window shopping…window shade shopping, that is. Research for a current project led me to check out A Shade Above, in the South End area of Charlotte. A Shade Above specializes in custom window coverings, specifically blinds, roman shades and plantation shutters. Their showroom is open to the public, and has a well-stocked resource library with shelves full of oversized binders displaying hundreds of samples. Interactive window installations right in the store help demonstrate the many options available.
A Shade Above carries several well known mid to high-end brands, including Hunter Douglas, Graber, and Manh Truc. They also have their own line of plantation shutters, which are produced locally right in Monroe, NC. Measurement and installation in your home are included with your order.
During my visit I discovered just how much there is to know about window shades. Not only are there hundreds of materials choices, there are also a variety of different configuration options and operating mechanisms. The sales staff at A Shade Above was very helpful and patient in explaining the various choices, and also ordered samples of the styles I was interested in, which I received by mail a few days later. If you plan to visit, the store is conveniently open Monday through Saturday.
AND, if you’re a newbie to the wide wide world of window coverings, stay tuned: I’ll be sharing a primer that covers the basics in my next post.
