Red wine, chocolate, kids and pets: Nature vs. Upholstery

Photo of chairIn my household, there are certain forces of nature (4-year-old child, cats, husband) who are the natural foes of pristine surfaces. Which is why my upholstery is all, by design, brown. I sigh over delicate silks and pretty prints and ivory leather, and think, it’s just not meant to be.  One piece of advice I have seen oft-repeated in design magazines is all white (slipcovered) furniture. “You can just throw it in the wash anytime!” That’s great, if you’re looking to sign up for extra laundry loads. Not me.

So I was intrigued to meet the folks from Fiber Services. They happened to be giving a demonstration at Pepper & Company in downtown Pineville while I was in the store this week. Fiber Services is a local company, based in Pineville, who have developed a proprietary product to protect all kinds of fabric, including leather and rugs, against stains. Their product doesn’t wash off; it is petroleum based, and doesn’t change the color or texture of the surface to which it’s applied. In a nifty demonstration, they showed us how the product works using water and a basic tissue:

No fabric proection on left; with fabric protection on right.

The water beaded up and rolled around on the surface of the treated tissue.Fiber Services will come to your home and apply their product to your existing furniture, drapes and rugs. For an idea of price, an upholstered club chair runs about $55; sofas run about $150 depending on the size. I think this is a smart way to protect the investment you’ve made in your home furnishings. And just maybe opens up a wider range of choices when selecting new pieces. For more information about Fiber Services, contact  Jeannie Laffoday at [email protected].Fiber Services Flyer
