Combine the editing eye of an art curator, the local talent of North Carolina artists and artisans, and exclusive deals on handmade goods, and what do you get? The great idea behind The Makery! I had the chance to interview The Makery co-founder Krista Anne Nordgren recently and learn about this exciting new business venture. Based in Durham, NC, The Makery was founded by Krista Anne and her sisters Sarah Rose and Brita. As Krista Anne explained it, their goal is to make buying local easier, period. The sisters’ prior experience selling art and craft on Etsy.com (a global marketplace for handmade goods) had been frustrating. They needed a more effective way of connecting the community with the work of North Carolina craftsmen. Thus, The Makery was born. The way it works is simple: sign up to become a member, and each week receive an invitation to purchase from a curated selection of limited edition hand-made goods.
Each week, the work of a few different local artists is selected and showcased on themakeryproject.com. A range of items, from jewelry to housewares is offered, typically in a price range of $25-$250. A few of this week’s special finds:
I love the passion these talented sisters clearly show for local art and craft, and for making the work of artists more easily accessible to the public. Buying local not only puts dollars directly back into the community; I also believe you simply get a higher quality product when it comes straight from the caring hands of the person who made it.
And now, as we head into holiday season, it’s definitely not too early to be thinking about those gift lists. But if you like anything you see in my post here, you’ll have to act quickly. Sales of this week’s items only last until Tuesday, October 23rd. And then, a new batch of North Carolina artists will be featured. I can’t wait to see what The Makery finds for us next!
