Get Ready for Holiday Decorating!

My 4-year old simply adores this Nutcracker soldier at Southpark.

When planning holiday decorations for my own home, I’ve found it helps to start with a general “theme”. Whether it’s a specific color palette or a motif, a theme helps me to focus and ensure I don’t go too crazy buying excess decorations. Do you ever find it hard to exercise willpower when surrounded by pretty sparkly things? Or do you get deer-in-the-headlights syndrome, unable to choose when surrounded by too many options? I do! But I find that being consistent with a theme really helps.

There are probably infinite holiday decorating themes. I’ve come up with five examples here, using my favorite online tool, Pinterest. If you haven’t discovered Pinterest yet, it’s a virtual “vision board” of images you collect from anywhere on the internet. Similar to Facebook, there’s also a social networking component, which allows you to share and “follow” others’ pins. Clicking any of the images below will bring you to my Pinterest page, with links and more information on each item.

Holiday Theme 2: Blue Christmas

Holiday Theme 3: Scandinavian

Felted, cozy materials and a focus on red & white captures the essence of Christmas in Scandinavia. Just add a Stieg Larsson novel and a steaming hot cup of coffee.

Holiday Theme 4: Winter Wonderland

Bright whites with sparkling silver and gold remind me of sunlight on freshly fallen snow.

Holiday Theme 5: Retro

Pink, turquoise and vintage patterns are a fun throwback to an earlier era.

I really hope this gets the wheels turning on your holiday decorating this year. And if you do set up a Pinterest account, you can follow me here.
