Setting a Romantic Table

Romantic table thumbnail imageLast fall I created an autumnal-themed tablescape using the layered approach I learned about in a Pottery Barn decorating class. With Valentine’s Day on a Tuesday this year, we’ll be surely dining in. So I thought I’d try the same technique to create a romantic table for two. My goal was to do this only using items currently in the house, though I did purchase fresh flowers for the occasion. Here’s my table, and a step-by-step plan for how to create a romantic tablescape yourself.

How to create a tablescape:

1. Start with a neutral backdrop

For my neutral base layer, I used a plain ivory tablecloth.

2. Add a contrasting runner

Since this is a table for two, I ran the runner width-wise so it doubles as placemats. The runner was a little long, which I fixed by wrapping it around a red tray, which also gives a little lift to my centerpiece.

3. Add the centerpiece

Red roses are the obvious choice for Valentine’s Day, but I think you could use just about any color flower that coordinates with your linens and china. Can you believe these roses were only $9 at Earthfare?

4. Add your china, place settings and glassware

I recently started collecting some special occasion china. It’s a Finnish pattern by Iittala, with all kinds of mythical woodland creatures in a bright palette of red and blue. I love that I can use it throughout all of the winter holidays.

The chocolates are locally made by Davidson Chocolate. Don’t they look delicious?

Now all that’s needed is a little mood music and a great bottle of wine to get the dinner started off right!
